08 Sisimiut - Ilulissat
19. Aug 2006
It was nice to see a real Greenland township, with the neatly painted houses and the beautiful landscape.
We were off to the airport and visited the tower to hear about the latest weather – and the chance of crossing the icecap – but it was soon clear, that it was out of question. So we set out for Ilulissat and the ice fiord.
Flying VFR over some fantastic scenery we announced our arrival to Ilulissat tower, but then decided to take a detour in over the fiord to see the origin of a lot of the icebergs we had passed on our way.
And it was awesome to see the place where some 45 cubic kilometres of ice per year that separates from the glacier here.
We ended up with 2 more nights in Illulissat as the weather was unfavourable in Kulusuk. That gave us a chance for a boat trip into the fiord to see the icebergs close up.
