In the morning, the 23rd of August, a couple of phone calls to the tower in Kulusuk revealed, that although there were banks of fog in the vicinity of the airport, the airport itself was under a layer of broken clouds.
A pilot report gave the tops of clouds being at about 12.000 feet, so I decided to give it a try. The plan was to climb trough the clouds heading south towards Kangerlussuaq, and then see if we could get up over the top of the clouds - without picking up ice on the wings.
If that would happen, the alternative was to descend back into Kangerlussuaq. But we got to the top of the clouds without ice, and requested a direct routing to Kulusuk. This was granted.
At 13.000 feet we stayed above the clouds, but unfortunately the icecap was covered by the clouds, so we did not see much.
Coming into Kulusuk, we could descend clear of clouds, to land in rainy weather. After a short stay to refuel, we headed off again, and set the course to Reykjavik.
By the time we reached Reykjavik it was dark, and we landed on the ILS runway 19. One great thing about Reykjavik airport is the fact, that there is a hotel only 50 meters from where we parked the plane.
